A shackle is the simplest lock a sailor trusts. A bow of metal, a pin threaded through it, nothing that springs or snaps. Sailors have worn them on cord for as long as there have been spare shackles and idle hands on deck.
Most of the versions sold today are the shape without the substance: a zinc casting with a thin plating that wears through by the end of one summer, sold at one price on Monday and another on Friday.
